Sneaky Dogs

Introducing …..

G’Day Mob,

Here at the Rocky Springs Rambles I tend to …well, ramble. That means time slips away and I go to write a post and remember you haven’t been officially introduced to some of the cast.

At the moment we have nine dogs on Rocky Springs. Five of them you have already met: Bonnie and Clyde (the pig dogs), Bo (the deep-barked huntaway) and Spy and Manu (the border collies).

Brian considers Spy to be the best working dog on the place and often breeds him with Manu. We have had several litters in the last few years with most of the pups being sold; although some have been retained. So without further rambling, come and meet the next generation: Continue reading

A Day in the Life of a Rocky Springs Dog

18th February 2011

Day breaks and Wag leads a canine chorus, a cacophony of barks and howls that speaks of happy animals. The performance continues until Brian steps outside and growls. Wag may be leader of the pack but in absolute terms Brian is top dog. Continue reading

Family Album

G’Day Mob,

At the moment Rocky Springs is littered with border collie puppies, fathered by Spy. They are five weeks old and nearly ready to be weaned so if you want one you’d better be quick.

7 puppies

They are endearingly cute and cuddly and I get a bit clucky around them. Puppies strike straight to this farmer’s heart and I thought it was an opportune time to share with you some puppy snaps from the family album. Continue reading

Menzies Romance

1st August 2009

G’Day Mob,

Pep turned 112 in July.

My Meat

The old bloke is part deaf and part blind and for most of the time looks all of his advanced years. He sleeps inside by the fire at night and in a sunny spot in the garden during the day. He will bark at strange noises if the other dogs bark loud enough to wake him first. But occasionally he relapses from this routine. He was with me at the woolshed the other day when I noticed him staggering across the rocks and tussocks towards a large flock of white cockatoos in the next paddock. He stumbled and swayed and pulled up at the hinge netting. Yet he hasn’t always been an old dog… Continue reading

Warialda Show

12th May 2009

G’Day Mob,

The local agricultural show was an integral part of my childhood. I remember watching from the school bus as each afternoon in the week preceding the show the grounds swelled with amazing rides and colourful caravans. Mum encouraged my sister and I to always participate and from an early age I made faces out of vegetables and diligently painted plaster of paris figurines for exhibition in the pavilion. On show weekend we would run to see if we had won a prize, then it was off to sideshow alley to spend pocket money that had been saved for months, before, broke and worn-out, we went in search of Mum and Dad for a dagwood dog as the fireworks began.

In keeping with tradition I was keen to visit the 2009 Warialda Show. Continue reading

What is a Farm Dog?

12th March 2009

G’Day Mob,

What is a farm dog?

In the simplest terms a farm dog is a worker who enjoys nothing more than going to work and is happy to take payment in food, board and the occasional word of encouragement. Food can be anything from dry biscuits to prime beef, board anything from a hollow log to an old fridge (or a sheepskin rug indoors if your name is Pep), and words of encouragement are open to interpretation: for example Brian has called Bo a bloody idiot so many times that Bo now thinks it is a term of endearment. Continue reading

10th February 2009

G’Day Mob,

As I read back through these rambles I realise that there is one from the cast of characters who is not getting air time in proportion to the impact he has had on our lives. That would be because he is now over one hundred years old in human terms and is understandably in retirement. Of course I am talking about Pep.

So in order to rectify this oversight I thought I would bring you a few of his past exploits, and he can take his fame and strut it before the other dogs as he ignores them on his morning rounds and cocks his leg on their kennels – dressed in his pyjamas. Let’s head back to 1995: Continue reading
